Quotes of Wisdom

"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become."
Carl Jung
Have you ever had a moment where life threw you a curveball, and you thought, "Why me, seriously?" Or maybe you’ve had an encounter with some bad decisions and thought, "Well, this is who I am now, isn’t it?" If so, you're definitely not alone. But Carl Jung, the wise and wonderful Swiss psychiatrist, gives us a refreshingly different perspective on this. His quote, "I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become," is basically the ultimate power move in the world of personal growth. πͺ
Let’s break this down, shall we? What Jung is saying is that, while life will undoubtedly toss some interesting situations your way (some of them less-than-ideal), you are the one that in the end gets to decide how to respond. You’re not locked in the past, and you’re not doomed to be defined by every mistake or tough experience. The power to change your future lies in your own hands. π±
It’s Not What Happens, It’s How You Respond
Imagine you spill coffee all over your favorite shirt, and you’ve got to head out to work in 20 minutes. Do you a) have a mini meltdown, swear at your coffee, and call it a day? Or do you b) shrug it off, maybe laugh a little, grab another shirt, and move on with your day? You might say, "Well, this is a trivial example," but really it’s not. It’s a great example of how you respond to everyday challenges. You are not defined by what happens to you. You are defined by how you choose to react.
As Viktor Frankl, a man who lived through some of humanity’s darkest hours, once said, “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.” π Pretty powerful stuff, right? That space is where the magic happens. In those moments, you can choose to grow, laugh, learn, or evolve. Even in the toughest situations, you can choose to become stronger, wiser, and better.
Embrace Your Inner Superhero π¦Έ♂️
We are all capable of transformation, which is one of life's most empowering aspects. You certainly have your preferred superpower, even though you might not have superhuman strength (unless you're secretly Superman, in which case, awesome). You have the power to influence who you become every day. You are always one decision away from altering your narrative, regardless of how far along you are.
And, let's be real: Who doesn’t want to feel like a superhero at least once in their life? You’re the protagonist in the story of your life, and the plot isn’t hard set in stone. You get to write the next chapter. So, go ahead and sprinkle some "I choose greatness" energy into your morning routine. π You never know what superpower will show up!

Embracing the Growth Mindset
This concept of "becoming" is the cornerstone of a growth mindset in addition to being a fancy philosophical theory. This notion that you can develop your skills and intelligence with hard work, persistence, and a desire to learn was made popular by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck. It is the complete opposite of the "fixed mindset," which maintains that you are born with specific skills. Warning: The growth attitude is much more enjoyable! π
When you have a growth mindset, you see hurdles as chances to improve, failures as lessons learned, and setbacks as stepping stones. Consider it similar to video games. You level up, respawn, die, and continue. Every setback is merely an opportunity to grow from it. π‘
“Becoming” Isn’t Always Easy, But It’s Always Worth It
It's true that when life throws you curveballs, it's simple to lose hope. There will be moments when you feel as though the world is attempting to teach you a very challenging lesson (looking at you, Monday mornings). However, Jung's quotation is lovely because it serves as a reminder that we are not trapped in a victim mentality. We are able to rise above our situation.
"How we choose to react determines our lives, not what happens to us." Your inner fortitude comes into play at this point. You become the best version of yourself each time you choose joy over irritation, compassion over bitterness, or progress over stagnation. A good comeback tale is loved by the cosmos. π
