" Problem talk creates problems, solution talk creates solutions."
Steve de Shazer
Why Talking About Problems Just Breeds More... Problems (And What to Do Instead)
Ever noticed how a small issue can snowball into a full-blown *catastrophe*—all because we just *won’t stop thinking or talking about it*?π€
You spill coffee ☕on your homework due today in the morning, and suddenly it’s, “Ugh, I knew today was going to be the worst!” In another situation, your co-worker conveniently eats your clearly labeled lunch bag from the fridge, and you spin into a dramatic dialogue about how “nothing ever goes right.” Sound familiar?
Let’s pause here and consider this gem of a quote:
“Problem talk creates problems, solution talk creates solutions.”
It’s like the best piece of life advice we never asked for, but desperately needed. And the best part? It’s rings totally true
The Spiral of Doom (a.k.a. Problem Talk)
When we talk endlessly about our problems—how unfair the universe is to us, how people ALWAYS let us down, how our dog gave us a side-eye look this morning—we’re not actually solving anything. We’re just digging ourselves into a bitter hole of negativity, one complaint at a time. And while a little venting can feel good (who doesn’t love a good dramatic sigh?), staying there too long turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
It’s like using a megaphone to yell π₯“THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE”π₯ instead of, you know, grabbing the water hose or calling the fire department.π§
Just Flip the Script: Welcome to Solution Talk
Solution talk is where we can benefit in any situation when it happens. It’s when, instead of dwelling on the drama, we shift our focus to action.
Spilled your coffee before school? Instead of moaning about your cursed caffeine fate, say, “Time to keep a backup shirt in your locker. You see, I’m basically a genius.”
Co-worker stole your lunch? “Guess I’ll label it with a "Do not Eat or else" next time. Problem solved.
Solution talk moves you forward. It takes the power away from the problem and hands it over to YOU. You NOW become the hero of the story—not just the narrator behind the never-ending soap opera.
Why It Actually Works (Even If It Sounds Kind of Lacking in Reality)
When we focus on solutions, our brain shifts into problem-solving mode. It starts to get creative. It starts looking for options, opportunities, and clever hacks. You go from “stuck and stressed out” to “resourceful and kind of unstoppable.”
It also makes you a LOT more fun to be around. Because let’s be honest—nobody wants to have dinner with a human dark cloudπ§️. But someone who can laugh at life’s chaos and pivot like a boss? That’s a dinner-worthy friend right there.
Try It Out: From Gloom to Boom
Next time you're tempted to go on a complaint tirade, catch yourself right away. Ask, “Okay, what can I do about it?” Or, if that feels too hard, ask, “What’s one tiny step I can try right now?”
You'll be unbelievably amazed how even the smallest shift can lead to better outcomes, better moods, and fewer stolen-lunch meltdowns.
So the next time life throws shade over your sunshine, remember: π
Problem talk creates problems. Solution talk? That creates superstars.
Now go forth from here, speak like a expert problem solver—and save your dramatic monologues for karaoke night.
