You’ve Got to Be in It to Win It: Why Showing Up Is Half the Victory
Let’s get something perfectly clear: you are NOT going to win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket. Sorry to be the bearer of painfully obvious news, but someone had to say it. This idea, wrapped up in the delightfully catchy phrase “you’ve got to be in it to win it,” isn’t just for gamblers and late-night infomercial sweepstakes—it’s a life philosophy. One with glitter, balloons, and just a hint of caffeine-induced confidence.☕

Picture this: you’re standing on the sidelines of a dance floor, music pumping, lights flashing, watching people awkwardly flail to the beat. You’re thinking, “I could totally outdo that guy trying to do the worm.” But unless you get out there and bust a move (even with two left feet), you’ll never steal the spotlight. The DJ is not handing out trophies for non-participation.
That’s the core of “you’ve got to be in it to win it.” It’s about participation, guys! You can’t win the job if you don’t apply. You can’t get the part if you don’t audition. You can’t find your soulmate if you never leave the comfort of your home.
But here’s where it gets really hard to hear: being “in it” doesn’t guarantee you’ll win. Nope. Life isn’t that generous. You might try and still fall over. You might launch a business and get a mere two customers—your mom and your BFF. But every time you show up, try, stumble, and try again, you’re increasing your odds. Not just of winning in the literal sense, but of learning, growing, and building your own highlight reel of “at least I gave it a shot.”
Remember that "winning" isn't always about trophies, first place, or viral TikToks. At times, it involves developing the courage to take risks. The kind that says, "Let's roll," shrugs, and looks fear in the eye. even if it means tripping over your shoelaces.
Consider how J.K. Rowling was rejected when she sent Harry Potter to twelve publishers. Yes, twelve. She was definitely "in it," and in the end, she really prevailed. By taking those risks she now sits on great wealth. The important thing is that she continued to appear. The victory was only a step away from each rejection.
So the next time you decide to hesitate—whether it’s entering a contest, starting a blog like I did, going on that karaoke stage, or pitching your wild idea to your boss—remember this: no one ever became a legend by sitting quietly in the back row. Legends jump in, screw up a few lines, get back up, and keep going.
Because the truth is, you CAN'T win if you’re not even playing. So lace up your metaphorical sneakers, build up on some confidence, and step into the arena. Sure, you might sweat a little, and sure, someone might have a better outfit, but at least you’ll be in the game.
And hey, who knows? You just might win.
