"Humans have gotten soft, and humans have gotten comfortable, and humans have gotten complacent, which has made humans afraid of change."

Above quote taken from the book Spirit Hacking, page 282 by author Shaman Durek

The statement suggests to me that as societies have advanced, many aspects of human life have become easier, which has led to a certain level of complacency. The comforts and conveniences we have placed around ourselves are partially to blame for this "softness" in contemporary humanity. In general, life now entails less risk and hardship than it did for our predecessors due to advancements in technology, improved living conditions, and an emphasis on reducing physical exertion. Although this advancement is a huge accomplishment in many respects, it can also promote a state of inertia in which people value comfort over challenge and familiarity over the unexpected.

Living in comfort zones often leads to psychological resistance to change. People may lose their "edge," a mental toughness that earlier generations had to develop simply to get by in daily life, if fundamental survival no longer requires resilience. Adapting to change was crucial for survival for a large portion of human history. In order to survive, nomadic tribes had to relocate in accordance with the changing seasons, society had to adapt to changing environmental conditions, and people frequently had to adapt to new circumstances. But now that a huge portion of the world's population has had their basic needs met, many of these survival instincts have diminished.

This “softness” has also fostered a preference for stability and predictability, which can sometimes make change feel threatening. When people become used to a particular way of life, change can then introduce uncertainty, which potentially disrupts the carefully cultivated comfort they have come to rely on. For instance, technological advancements in areas of automation are reshaping industries, but this shift can cause anxiety among workers who fear that their established skills may become obsolete. Rather than looking at the change as an opportunity to learn new skills, many rather view it as a threat to their security and well-being.

Additionally, this familiarity might sometimes result in complacency. People may assume that a certain quality of living will continue without effort once they have grown accustomed to it. Consequently, there is less incentive to strive for advancement, creativity, or even personal growth. Society may adopt patterns where preserving the status quo takes precedence over pushing boundaries. People who are complacent may fear change because they believe that even small changes could cause their lives to become unstable..

In conclusion, the resilience and adaptability that have traditionally propelled human development can be undermined by the "softness" that results from comfort and the repetitive structure of contemporary life. Change is not intrinsically harder because of this shift, but people are less inclined to accept it because they see it as a disruption to their comfort rather than a chance for personal development. In order to advance, people and society must actively combat these new issues We must understand that real progress means confronting discomfort and uncertainty.

Don't be afraid of change, embrace it.
